The Spaniards and the Obby Oss

£40.00

The Spaniards having ransacked Penzance and Newlyn were deterred from Penryn, so decided to attack Padstow.

At that time, most of the menfolk were at Sea with the likes of Grenville and Drake, so Padstow seemed completely undefended. The Spaniards thought they could just sail up the Estuary and into the Port.
The women of the town were not to be defeated! They first put on their red petticoats and then took the ‘Obby Oss’ and danced upon the Cliffs at Stepper Point. The Spaniards had never seen anything like it. They thought it was the Devil himself with a troop of Redcoats, so that beat a hasty retreat!
